  The Archaeology of the Silk Road. Along Iran, Central Asia and the Eurasian steppe (ca. 500 BC-500 AD)

  The aim of the lecture series is to deal with several scientific aspects of the relationships between the Iranian Empires, Central Asia, the Eurasian steppes and western China from an archaeological point of view. The results of the archaeological activities in the last century form a set of data which allows for a comprehensive outline of several key issues: urbanism, architecture, figurative and material culture.

  The series will present also benefit from the materials and reflections deriving from the archaeological excavations I carried out in Iran (1959-1975; 1999-2016), Turkmenistan (1989-2001); Hungary (1983-1996) and more recently in Uzbekistan (2008-2016), as well as study activities in China (2008-2016).

  The lectures will introduce Iranian nomadic tribes which are historically well known, but that have left limited archaeological traces. The recent field project in Uzbekistan at Kojtepa (Samarkand district) in collaboration with the Institute of Archaeology of the Uzbek Academy of Sciences aims at acquiring new data of a peripheral area Persian influence, which historically coincides with the territory of Sogdiana. These excavations allow for the discussion of relevant issues pertaining to Silk Roads studies in Central Asia region.

  The lectures will cover also the steppe areas between Iran and western China. This territorial commercial outlet of the Silk Roads in chronologically and geographically distant periods will allow for a description of the following aspects:

  1. the cultural centrality of different “Paths, Images and Material Culture” categorized within the concept of Silk Roads;

  2. the plurality of land and sea routes of the Silk Road;

  3. the “precedents” and “contemporary” paths to the Silk Roads (e.g. Jade Roads, Lapis lazuli Roads, Incense Roads etc.) as determinant aspects of a much more broad and diverse ground, embracing the whole ancient trade, between Rome, the Near and Middle East, Central Asia and China.

  1、在“丝路”概念下不同“路径、图像以及物质文化”所体现出的文化向心性;

  2、海陆“丝路”的多元性;
